Baz Bamigboye over at the Daily Mail claims to have the scoop on a surprise that director Sam Mendes sprung on his cast at a rehearsal for the new James Bond film this week.
According to the report, 75 year old Albert Finney has been cast in Bond 23 – to be formally unveiled next week. An insider apparently told Bamigboye that…
It was one of those fabulous “This can’t get any better!” moments because Mendes has upped the game by bringing in Bardem and Fiennes — and they’ve already got Dame Judi Dench.
So you think, well, who else can they get to make this any classier?
Also rumored in the article is news that John Logan might have been asked by Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the Bond films, to at least one other 007 screenplay.
Leave your comments as to what kind of role Finney would be suitable… villain, ally (someone inside MI6 or a foreign contact), etc?

This sounds awesome, I hope this film is this generations Goldfinger / You only live twice / classic Bond film

I think he’ll play Q. Earlyer this year when they asked Craig if Moneypenny and Q would return to the franchise in this new movie, and he didn’t say no, but said he wanted to explore them and perhaps re-invent them. I hope he plays Q because I miss having him in the movies. Not that I miss the crazy stupid gadget-centric plots, but I miss the character. I also miss Blofeld, and I hope Fiennes brings that character back.

The cast really sounds promising, but I doubt that it will be in the tone of Goldfinger or YOLT. It seems more like a FRWL type film – less action, more drama, Shakespearian cast.
I’ve heard a rumour Finney is playing a Foreign Office attache with dubious allegiances. Don’t know how true that is. But sounds more interesting character than playing Q.
Personally don’t see Finney as Q. He seems more suited to playing a new M or a darker character than Q.

How about him as Q. Let Judi Dench appear only as M in this.
