Ralph Fiennes speaks about his character in “Skyfall” and his personal history with Bond

The acclaimed Shakespearian actor felt he was a one-time candidate for the role of 007 himself. Ralph Fiennes admitted to the Daily Record that “There was a time in my life when [the role of James Bond] would have appealed to me. But I’m a bit on the old side now.”

Instead, Fiennes can explain that his part in the forthcoming 23rd James Bond adventure, Skyfall, will be one of a government agent. Whether he is working on the side of 007 or as an agent for another government is yet to be revealed. Fiennes is remaining tight-lipped about the details.

He did, however, open up a little about his personal history with the Ian Fleming novels: “I used to be a complete nerd about the books and the detail in them. They are fantastic. There was Fleming’s obsession with different kinds of champagne and caviar. He kind of fetishises these things.”

This hopefully puts to bed long-running rumors that Fiennes was hired to play the arch-villain Blofeld.

Rory Kinnear talks James Bond 23: Skyfall

As well as shooting James Bond 23, Skyfall, English actor Rory Kinnear has been involved in Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror and gave an interview to the website CultBox about his work thereon. Inevitably a little 007 showed up in the mix… here are some of Kinnear’s comments about rejoining the Bond family:

You’re currently filming the new James Bond film, Skyfall, returning as M’s Chief of Staff, Bill Tanner. How’s that going so far?

“Great, we’ve just been at Pinewood and around Waterloo and Smithfields doing some scenes with myself and Daniel [Craig] and Judi [Dench]. I go through to the beginning of February filming and I think they’re on until about April or May.”

That sounds like a fairly long shoot for you, does this mean that we see a bit more of Tanner this time around?

“Yes, Tanner gets a bit more facetime this time, [the part] is a bit more beefed-up. He’s basically performing the same role but there’s a bit more of him.”

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the film with the 50th anniversary coming up; is that excitement present on set as well?

“I think everyone’s generally just really excited about the script and how good it is – and we’ve got Sam [Mendes] directing.

“Obviously this is now my second one so I know how Daniel and Judi work. We all seem to get on very well so it feels like I’m becoming slightly more part of the family.”

Did you expect to return to the role of Tanner after Quantum of Solace?

“No, I wasn’t contracted to do any more so I guess I knew there was a possibility but I didn’t expect it, no.”

In the books, Tanner is Bond’s best friend – would you like to see that dynamic develop onscreen?

“I don’t know, the Tanner of Quantum of Solace wasn’t really the Tanner of the books, so I guess it’s a new kind of role. He’s not the same age as Bond, as I think he is in the books, but I think in this film their relationship does develop, yes.”

Skyfall press conference highlights

Aside from the factoids about the forthcoming James Bond film, the press conference gave 007 fans a teaser of what they can expect this time next year. Here’s a few basic highlights from the press conference:

The MC explains, as was first (to the best of our knowledge) reported on MI6, that 3rd November marks the day that Sean Connery was ushered onto the world stage as 007 in 1961.

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are welcomed to the stage to reveal the “worst kept secret in London” – the title of the James Bond film, Skyfall.

Sam Mendes is welcomed onto the stage to confirm a few rumors. He confirmed that a major set piece was to be shot in London’s Whitehall. Pervis, Wade and John Logan have written a “fantastic script” and Mendes is “incredibly excited”.

Ben Wishaw, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney will be playing top secret parts in scenes that Mendes cannot (or will not) reveal. “They might… or they might not…” was the answer Mendes offered for a well-posed question about if these would be characters Bond fans would recognise from the canon.

Just in case you were wondering Mendes pronounces the French actress’s name: “Bera-niece Mar-low” and the long-associated villain of the piece: “Hav-ear Bar-dem”.

Dame Judi is introduced by Mendes as a “young actress” that “some of you might not have heard of” but who “has a promising career ahead of her”.

Asked about what attracted him to Bond 23, Mendes claims to be a “huge fan of the Bond movies”. Mendes got “very excited” when he saw Craig in Casino Royale, which he “loved”, so working with Craig in Skyfall was part of the attraction. “Working with Sam is a dream come true” for Barbara Broccoli. Mendes’ “boyish excitement is really infectious,” says Broccoli.

Wilson says that “nobody thought we would get to 50 years of Bond” in 1961. Wilson tips his hat to the fans who supported the franchise all these years.

Craig says they have an “incredible crew”.

Dench suggests that she will never “get a grip on who M is” – nor anyone in the MI6 offices.

Harris says that she’s well into her training for the action sequences and feel’s “really ready” for what 007 can throw at her.

Mendes explains that there will be “lots of surprises” when quizzed about the return of some typical Bond gadgets. He also explained that the press were “not entirely accurate” in their assumption Bond will be “going back to his roots” with Scotland on the shooting schedule.

Barbara Broccoli dismissed the rumors of budget cuts with a rhetorical, “does it look like we’re cutting back?” The budget, Wilson tells us, is in the same range as the last film. Instead of cutting back they’re “adding” if anything. Barbara echoes her father when she says “it’s all going on the screen”.

Craig is “incredibly proud to be part of this gang of people” making Bond 23.

Bardem suggests that we should not conflate “a villain” and “a bad person”!

Mendes says he’s is very happy to be working with Alexander Witt and his second unit and that the action and special effects is the part that is new and exciting for him. He explains that the “action needs to coexist with the drama”. In addition he says that Oscar nominations (or wins for that matter) are “not the reason you do any movie and certainly not the reason you do a Bond movie”.

Asked what kind of training he has had to go through, Javier Bardem says “English vowels!”

Harris has been having a bit more of a workout with “stunt driving and firing machine guns”.

Sam Mendes was put on the spot at the conference when he was asked if he would be open to doing more than one Bond film. He was prompted by Broccoli and Wilson commented that “this is a question we’ve been trying to get the answer to”. Sam answered: “if in six months time I am still as excited as I am now, then the answer would be ‘yes’.”

The title, Skyfall, Barbara says, will have some “emotional context”.

Mendes says that it “doesn’t connect with the last two movies.” Quantum will not appear in Bond 23.

Craig was asked if he would be “doing this for a few more years?” / “Ask her,” said the Bond star, pointing at producer Barbara Broccoli. Cubby’s famed daughter answered, “yes, definitely.”

Albert Finney could be joining Bond 23 cast

Baz Bamigboye over at the Daily Mail claims to have the scoop on a surprise that director Sam Mendes sprung on his cast at a rehearsal for the new James Bond film this week.

According to the report, 75 year old Albert Finney has been cast in Bond 23 – to be formally unveiled next week. An insider apparently told Bamigboye that…

It was one of those fabulous “This can’t get any better!” moments because Mendes has upped the game by bringing in  Bardem and Fiennes — and they’ve already got Dame Judi Dench.

So you think, well, who else can they get to make this any classier?

Also rumored in the article is news that John Logan might have been asked by Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the Bond films, to at least one other 007 screenplay.

Leave your comments as to what kind of role Finney would be suitable… villain, ally (someone inside MI6 or a foreign contact), etc?

Timothy Gibbs appears on Bond 23 IMDb cast list as Agent Folstrum

Another rumor sparked by IMDb‘s relatively lax policy for who appears on what lists…

According to the online movie database, Timothy Gibbs has landed a bit part in James Bond 23. The editor of the page is obviously not optimistic about his plot pivotal role, as Gibbs’ name already has an (uncredited) annotation next to it.

Gibbs is a 44 year old California native who played a recurring character in TV drama Another World in the mid 1990s before taking bit parts in a series of films, notably in The Kings of Brooklyn. He plays Joseph Crone in forthcoming horror 11-11-11.

British press assert that Helen McCrory has been cast in James Bond 23

According to the usually suspect Daily Mail, Helen McCrory has won a role in James Bond 23. British born McCrory is famed for playing Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter saga as well as portraying Cherie Blair in two Peter Morgan penned dramas: The Queen and The Special Relationship.

In the same article, journalist Baz Bamigboye asserts that French star Berenice Marlohe is Bond’s latest lady friend after screen-testing at Pinewood with Sam Mendes. Perhaps this is what the Guardian meant when it suggested that 007 was ‘filming’ at Pinewood already? Marlohe was rumored to have won the part back in September – what said part involves it remains to be seen.

Ben Wishaw‘s name continues to be associated with the production, although it is unclear what role he might be lined up for.

James Bond 23: September rumor roundup

The Swedish press claim to have a tip on one of their locals appearing in Bond 23.

Expressen reports that local star Ola Rapace has been turning down jobs to make room for a top secret, big budget, English language film. The paper assumes this to be Bond 23 – helmed by Sam Mendes and staring Daniel Craig.

MI6 notes the remote connection that the actors ex-wife, Noomi Rapace, played Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish film adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – an English language remake starring Daniel Craig is currently in production.

Also in the news this week is two-time Felix Leiter, Jeffery Wright, who told Coming Soon that he was yet to hear if he will be back in Bond 23. Wright has developed quite a fan following in the course of his two films and any move to write him out may lead to disappointed viewers – particularly after Craig teased us with news this Bond film was going to be a ‘Classic’ flick.

German news sites claim Javier Bardem has confirmed Bond 23 role

According to scouts over at MI6, the Spaniard, Javier Bardem, who has been long-associated with Bond 23 has signed on to the production.

The site claims that “several” German news blogs have touted the news and predict an announcement of Bardem’s involvement shortly, should there be any weight at all to the news.

The No Country For Old Men star was first mentioned in association with James Bond 23 in January 2011 and the news came from the normally reliable source, Deadline.com.

Bardem is widely expected to play a villain or henchman.

Naomie Harris reveals details of her audition: doesn’t know if she is a Bond girl

The tabloids first caught the rumor that Londoner Naomie Harris was in the running for a James Bond 23 role when the News of the World ran a loosely worded story in early June. Then the star herself confirmed she was in talks. Finally, all within a matter of hours, EON Productions confirmed to Entertainment Weekly there was some substance to the rumor.

On British radio the other day Harris was inevitably asked about her Bond girl chances. She described her audition for listeners:

“My audition was really great actually because it’s so top secret, the whole Bond thing. I hadn’t realised how top secret it was. I’ve auditioned for a lot of things before but never for something where you can’t see the script, it’s that secret. I auditioned with a scene from Quantum of Solace.”

As well as ‘fesssing up about the Bond audition Naomie said she was 007′s biggest fan and would be delighted to have a role in the film.

“I’ve never played a beautiful vacuous woman. I don’t think I’d be very good at it. So if that was the role, it wouldn’t appeal,” she said in an in depth interview with the Coventry Telegraph.

“But I just don’t think Bond would be interested in a woman like that now. The new Bond has to be intellectually stimulated by whoever he’s having his dalliances with.”

“What makes Bond films work is that they’re responsive to the times. Eva Green’s character in Casino Royale was not scantily clad. She was an intelligent, strong, modern woman.”

“The older idea of the Bond movie is in the past. Now it appeals to all generations, ages and sexes.”
