Daniel ’007′ Craig: A Quote-a-thon

Daniel Craig, the current James Bond star, has been promoting his sci-fi western, Cowboys & Aliens this week. As a result, a number of clips, quotes and soundbites made their way into the blogosphere. We’re doing our best to keep up with these, and round many of the most interesting up below:

One of the more interesting Cowboys marketing gimmicks was to have director Jon Favreau interview his star, Craig. Inevitably Bond came up in the discussion.

[Sam Mendes] jumped feet first in to it – read every book and soaked up everything about it. I read the script the other day and I’m more excited about [Bond 23] than I was about Casino Royale, because we’ve got a classic Bond movie… plus lots of other things

With so many location rumors circulating it has sometimes been hard to keep up but just recently Daniel Craig let slip to the media that Bond 23 was bound for India. The quote Craig gave to the Telegraph (in India) when prompted for shooting information was:

We are working on the schedule for India and yes, it’s always exciting to play James Bond and this time is no different.

Earlier, Craig let everyone know he was “gagging” to get started on Bond 23 and has said a number of times now how excited by the script and by Sam Mendes’ direction he is. One of the earliest promos for Cowboys was an interview with Extra:

We’ve got a script, it’s fantastic and we start shooting October… November this year for a November release next year,” Craig said. “I’m really gagging to go. I’ve had a break now, and things have come together with the timing of it.

There were also some rumors flying about that he had been ordered to ‘bulk up’ for Bond 23 after looking wiry in the Western, on this matter, the James Bond star simply said:

I don’t have to bulk up much. I’m just going to get fit.

Daniel Craig f***ing excited to work with Mendes again on Bond 23

Esquire conducted a sit-down interview with three time Bond star Daniel Craig in which he chatted about his Bond image and his excitement to be working with Sam Mendes.

The actor/director combo last worked together on the gritty Road To Perdition.

Sam’s gonna do it, Sam Mendes, and I’m really fucking really lookin’ forward to the fact that he’s gonna do it,” he says, snapping to. Mendes directed him in the gloomy thriller Road to Perdition in 2002. Craig tricks out a little smirk then. A concession, a comfort maybe.

“This has become my way, it’s as simple as that,” he says. “I mean, since I’ve just become James Bond. And I think, you know, that means being something that people feel they own. And all of the sudden I’m getting magazine covers, when I got nothing for ten years before that. I say it’s just pure luck. And doing covers, people interviewing me, and they want to know everything and I’m going, I’m not gonna fucking tell you!”

Craig settles once more into the clutch of his muscular recline. “Well, you know,” he says, sliding the Ray-Bans from his nose. “I mean this is actually very nice. We can talk about anything else, and hopefully it can be made interesting.”

Past James Bond film stars offer encouraging words to fans over Bond 23 postponement

As well as Daniel Craig pitching in a good word for the producers, other James Bond alumni have come out in support of Bond.

Many stars were gathered at an international fan even in London, UK last weekend and fans may be reassured to know both recent Bond girl Gemma Arterton – Agent Fields in Quantum of Solace – and classic villain Richard Kiel – Jaws in Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me – say… James Bond will return.

Gemma said: “It shows the state of the film industry at the moment, especially the British film industry. Fingers crossed – it’s James Bond so it has to continue and it will. It’s just a minor blip.”

“They had a gap before… Just before Goldeneye,” says Kiel.

“Somebody bought MGM. So it’ll be made. There’ll be another Bond film, don’t worry.”

Robert Patterson wants to be James Bond

Move out of the way Daniel Craig, Teenage heart throb Robert Patterson has expressed an interest in the 007 role.

Patterson was chatting to fans and media on the picket-line at the premiere of his new film Remember Me. The English star, 23, told the presses: “I’m feeling really, really good, I’m so happy to be here tonight and to meet everyone… I never go to places where crowds congregate, so it’s always a novelty. It’s a completely separate aspect of my life. It’s nice.”

He said: “Everyone was so supportive on set. I got everyone helping me out everyday. Fans were gathering on the street and the crew would have to get really close together and form a circle around me, so we were really close. I don’t know, I guess I haven’t worked with that kind of unity before.”

Pattinson said at the premiere that he “would love to” play James Bond but confesses he is “not very good at running”.

Michael Sheen jokes that he wants to play Miss Moneypenny in Bond 23

The Welsh actor who has become synonymous with the award-winning co-screenwriter of Bond 23, Peter Morgan joked to the presses recently that he would love to play M’s secretary, the lovely Miss Moneypenny – who has been absent fro the Craig era to date.

Last year Sheen was connected to the role of Blofeld by the tabloids but denied the rumors, most of which sprang from the announcement of Morgan’s involvement. The pair have both been involved in The Queen, Frost/Nixon, The Special Relationship and The Deal.

Peter Morgan has written the story for the next Bond film so there was that connection and then a journalist wrote as a joke that I would be playing Blofeld and that went viral,” he said. “When people ask me, I always say I’m playing Miss Moneypenny, which I wish was true but is not!

“I suppose it’s hard to play Blofeld now because of the Austin Powers films where Mike Myers plays Dr Evil. Roger Moore dropped him down a chimney didn’t he, so he’d have to come back all f**ked up!”

Sheen is clearly making light of the press’s original rumor.

Freida Pinto: “I’m too young to be a Bond girl”

This week the Times of India talked to Freida Pinto, who the press had previously been touting as a Bond girl contender.

The new Indian actress on the Hollywood scene says that she had “no idea where that came from,” when quizzed about the Bond rumors.

“Even my LA agents were curious. But this is a Bond thing, it happens with a lot of actresses, or with those in the news. It was very flattering, I must say, and I don’t know if I would have done it. I’m too young to be a Bond girl.

“There’s not much of a role, though some of them have become iconic, and you need somebody more mature and beautiful than me.”

Mr White will not return to James Bond

Bond fans will recall that Mr. White, the silent antagonist of Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale escaped his fate by the blessing of a cut scene from the end of Quantum, just over a year ago.

Now, the actor that plays him, Danish star Jesper Christensen, has made a statement at a Berlin film festival press conference, saying two is enough, and according to the James Bond website MI6 the actor has no polite words for Bond or Craig. The British site ran the quote:

“Today, I admit that I regard [Casino Royale] and [Quantum of Solace] as really shit. All the people die in them, so two movies are enough for me.”

With the decision to save Mr White for future drama – many of us assumed that he would return in Bond 23 – the fan community are now speculating about the fate of one of the more interesting villains to grace this new era of James Bond.

The new James Bond movie will obviously proceed without him, but we wonder how much of a shock this has come to the producers of the James Bond 007 adventures and will a recast be attempted in order to wrap up the story.

Perhaps a Blofeld-like operation is needed for Mr. White?

UPDATE: Jesper Christensen explains that he was misrepresented at the Berlin Film Festival, saying “I have great respect for the people who make Bond films. They have managed to create their very own meta-universe, almost a genre in itself and a series of 23 films now. It is unique.”

Simon Russell Beale admits he begged his friend, Sam Mendes, for a Bond role

The up and coming actor who has served the theatre expertly for many years (including some stunning Shakespeare and Chekov) admitted to The Independent that he had dreamed of a role in the new Bond film.

Whilst planning a production of the Bard’s “King Lear” with his friend Sam Mendes – tipped for the directorial job of the new James Bond movie – and whilst talking, Beale dropped a few hints:

“YES!” he bellows, “Of course! Every actor wants to be in Bond. I’d love to be a baddie. I saw Sam just before Christmas and dropped a hint – and he just looked wearily at me.”

What chance does he have? A far better one than the likes of Jonas or Caulfield… and not just because he is buddies with the would-be director of the Bond picture. His obscurity from mainstream media and his impressive stage career will no doubt endear him to the James Bond producers
