Javier Bardem awarded for his role as Silva in “Skyfall”

The villainous and creepy Silva is ably played by Spaniard Javier Bardem, and the Press Academy agree!

Bardem was amongst the winners at the Satellite Awards this month, securing their “Best Supporting Actor” nod.

Skyfall is being pushed by both Sony and EON Productions to be shortlisted for an Oscar in the New Year.

“Skyfall” gets overwhelmingly positive reviews from UK critics

It can’t be easy making the longest running film franchise fresh and interesting… it can’t be easy at the best of times, but on this 50th anniversary year, the producers and new director Sam Mendes had their work cut out.

Last week critics got their claws on the film for the first time, and the reviews appear positive. The Rotten Tomatoes website is currently listing at an aggregate score of 96%.

Here’s a few soundbites from some of the reviews – some of which are spoilerific.

Skyfall swipes the best and most established Bond elements from every actor’s tenure and combines them into a film so satisfying as a stand alone story it’s nearly impossible to envisage how it could be improved. – Clothes of Film

On his third outing Daniel Craig’s Bond finally feels like he’s come into his own, a strong balance of old and new but a rugged, clever character all his own. And Skyfall is the suave yet wry, superbly confident and perfectly executed movie to match him. – Cinema Blend

Bardem, who created such a memorable screen villain in No Country for Old Men‘s Anton Chigurh, repeats the trick with Silva. He’s camp, creepy and reptilian, and his first encounter with Bond is enough to make you laugh one moment then squirm the next. – Digital Spy

Ultimately, Mendes delivers an assured, accomplished Bond film that stands somewhere between delivering what the public expects from a Bond film and creating something original and new. His Bond is certainly more nuanced and intricate and instilled with a sense of Britishness that befits 007′s fiftieth year on the screen. – MI6

Ably directed by Sam Mendes, Skyfall – the 23rd official 007 outing – is at its finest during a bruising, tumultuous opening half, fired by an electrifying pre-credits chase scene and a script that nods shrewdly to the Wikileaks furore. Cyber-terrorists have stolen a hard drive containing a complete list of Nato operatives that they proceed to leak online, in weekly instalments, five names at a time. – Guardian

One of the pleasures of Skyfall is the amount of screen time given to characters who in previous films have had only a marginal role. Dench’s M in particular is foregrounded. She’s at once a maternal figure and someone (we learn) who has behaved very ruthlessly towards her spies. Ralph Fiennes registers strongly as a bureaucratic type, breathing down her neck but with hidden reserves of courage. There is enjoyable banter, too, between Bond and Ben Whishaw’s very youthful but very boffin-like Q. An added treat is Albert Finney as a bearded Scottish gamekeeper/vigilante. – Independent

First official still of Javier Bardem as Silva

With the launch of the new trailer, some new pictures are circulating the internet. One of these shows us our first official look at Javier Bardem’s character. Little is known about his motivations but it is clear he is behind the stolen agent identities and has a grudge against the incumbent “M”. Take a look below:

“Skyfall” international trailer

Surprisingly different, and surprisingly more revealing than the teaser trailer (and indeed the IMAX teaser trailer that was leaked recently), the first international theatrical trailer was released online:

A first real look at Javier Bardem as Silva, after the peak we got in the Olympics TV spot. We also see James Bond “die” – the climax to the Turkish train sequence! – and come back from the dead to aid MI6 and M when top secret data is stolen.

Javier Bardem praises co-star Daniel Craig

The Spanish actor Bardem, who appeared as a shady silhouette in the first teaser trailer for Skyfall, says that Daniel Craig is “a great colleague”.

He told the National: ”He’s shooting non-stop and I’m thinking: ‘Oh my God, I don’t know how you do it’. He’s on top of all the stunts, and I go, ‘man, if I were you, I would be a mess’. In my opinion, he’s a great Bond.”

Although a raft of photos emerged onto the internet featuring Daniel Craig shooting on location in the UK and Turkey, Bond villain Bardem has kept a very low profile. The only picture we have seen of the actor in costume showed the villain in a clever disguise.

Sam Mendes says he wanted to create a real Bond villain

According to a comment the Director of Skyfall made to the media recently, Sam Mendes wanted to up the ante in terms of villainy seen in the 23rd James Bond film.

[It's been] a while since there was a classic … what I would call a classic Bond villain. I’m not saying these guys weren’t great. I thought Mads [Mikkelsen] was particularly good in Casino Royale

But I wanted somebody perhaps a bit more flamboyant, perhaps a bit more frightening, and so I felt like we needed a great actor to achieve that.

Sam Mendes ultimately cast Javier Bardem as the villain Raoul Silva – whose motives remain a closely guarded secret.

James Bond 23 is “Skyfall”

After months of speculation almost all of the most salient details pertaining to James Bond 23 – now known as Skyfall – have been revealed.

Production has started on James Bond 23 as of 3rd of November 2011. The regular press conference that announces the start of filming was moved from its ‘spiritual’ home of Pinewood to central London in order that the cast and crew be on hand for shooting in London that very day. We understand Pinewood is expecting the lead cast on the 7th of November 2011.

Speaking of cast, almost all of the rumors we’ve been taking seriously these last few weeks have come to fruition. As such, the cast is confirmed to include:

  • Javier Bardem
  • Ralph Fiennes
  • Naomie Harris
  • Berenice Marlohe
  • Ben Wishaw
  • Albert Finney

Many familiar faces will be returning to take their positions behind the camera. Dennis Gassner of Quantum of Solace production design fame will be returning along with Chris Corbould, Gary Powell and Debbie McWilliams – whose job, as casting director, has been underway for months.

Although Tariq Anwar ‘confirmed’ his involvement in Bond 23 earlier in the year, Stuart Baird will edit Skyfall.

The press conference also confirmed a number of locations, including Scotland, Istanbul and Shanhai – which was only recently rumored as a location of substance.

At the same time as launching the film, Sony pictures opened up an official James Bond fan page on Facebook and claimed the username @007 on Twitter.

Several of the below photos (and a video from the conference are available on the Facebook account).

A short synopsis is now available: “In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

Javier Bardem self-confirmed for James Bond 23

The Spannish actor and star of No Country for Old Men, Javier Bardem, has been speaking to the media about his good-will work and whilst they were at it Nightline popped the Bond 23 question:

The journalist in a recent video interview prompted Bardem to tell us “about the next villain you are going to play, in James Bond?”

“I am very excited, my parents took me to watch the movies, and I saw all of them, and to play that is going to be fun. They chose me to play this man, but I cannot give you many details.”

Bardem’s name as been associated with the production since January when it was revealed he was offered a part… only this week can we confirm that he will star in the film.

Daniel Craig confirms Fiennes & Bardem still contenders for Bond 23 role

Daniel Craig is gearing up for James Bond 23 and, as a result, is becoming a little more open about the casting situation.

In an interview with MTV the 007 star asserted that Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem are in the running for Bond 23 villains.

Both names have a long history of connections to the forthcoming 23rd James Bond film: Bardem admitted he was in talks in February 2011. A month later Variety leaked the news that Fiennes was performing on London’s West End for a strictly limited run so that he could be involved in Bond 23.

Could Spaniard Bardem pass himself off as a Turkish villain?

Craig has high hopes that both Hollywood icons will appear alongside the leading Brit for Bond 23.

He also offered up another praise of his director and reasserted his confidence in the Bond 23 script: “We’ve got a great script this time. I’m as excited about this script as I was about the ‘Casino Royale’ script. I think in Sam [Mendes] we’ve got the perfect director. The cast is coming together now. I can’t wait to get going on it.”
