John Logan close to completing first draft of Bond 24

The screenwriter who came on board the 007 franchise along with his colleague Sam Mendes with Skyfall is almost ready to submit a draft. Says the writer in a recent interview:

“Right now the first draft [of Bond 24] is almost done, I’m terrifically excited about it! I’ve been working very closely with Sam Mendes, and it’s been joyous to pick up from our work on Skyfall and just continue on with the storytelling.”

As readers will note, Logan is pretty explicit that it will pick up where Skyfall left. Does this just allude to the new M and Moneypenny who joined the cast? Does this mean that Judi “M” Dench’s ghost may be weighing down 007 for a few more adventures? What else springs to mind?

He confirmed, also, that filming on James Bond 24 would start in October this year. He refused to comment on Blofeld and Quantum rumors, although the Quantum arc has been left thoroughly open. It has been rumored in the past that Logan was on board for two adventures that could well be back to back outings. Logan refused to comment, saying, let him get on with Bond 24 before addressing Bond 25. Bond 25 is the last of the current contract Craig has with Bond’s producers.

Local producer excited to have Bond 23 considering shooting in Southern and South Africa

In a piece that focuses on the budding South African film industry, the rumors of 0f 007 heading to South Africa continue.

Anant Singh a film producer told The Hollywood Reporter: “We are excited that the new James Bond film is considering locations in South and Southern Africa. Film people love to work in our country.”

Although this is far from a stone chiseled source, perhaps people “on the ground” know a little more than they are letting on. This is the first mention of possible locations outside the borders of The Republic of South Africa – could this mean that Bond 23 producers are eyeing up more than one location on the African continent?

Production Manager Terry Bamber to begin work on Bond 23 in August

According to the twitter feed of the 3 time 007 Production Manager Terry Bamber, his work will “God willing” begin on James Bond 23 in August 2011. It is expected that shooting will commence in November 2011.

Bamber  has worked on three 007 productions: Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace as 2nd Unit Production Manager.

In another Tweet Bamber reveals his preference to shoot in India:

I have been coming to India since 1992 when I first worked in Varanasi – I am really hoping the next Bond film will come

This lends some weight to the earlier story that was circulating the Times of India this week – that the new James Bond movie production crew were seeking permission to shoot in India.

X Factor star Mary Byrne wants to sing the theme to James Bond 23

According to rumors Mary Byrne has thrown her name in the hat to be the songsmith for the 23rd James Bond adventure.

“We have talked about it,” she said. “We have put it out there, but they haven’t got back to me yet.

I would be the happiest woman on this planet, and that’s the truth. To sing a Bond song, you would be up there with the greats, the likes of Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Paul McCartney. To even consider me would be a phenomenal feeling, and I would be so honoured and proud.”

Byrne added: “I love James Bond movies – I loved them from the Sean Connery ones. Connery is my number one Bond, there’s no doubt about that.

“But my favourite Bond is Roger Moore because he is my generation, and then Pierce Brosnan as the sexy one. Daniel Craig brings a different dimension to it.”

It is unlikely that 007 producers would be considering a theme song artist this early into pre-production.

Bond 23 on the verge of being distributed by old hands, Sony

Again Deadline have the scoop that 007 may be roaring back into life with a little help from its old friends at Sony Pictures. The production company was involved in the distribution of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace and was set to stand down – handing the reigns over to MGM – after the 22nd adventure.

But… what with the financial crisis the Big Cat has found itself in, MGM executives were on the prowl for a producing parter again.

It was rumoured earlier in the year that MGM’s new top brass were playing interested parties off against each other in order to get the best deal for MGM, long term.

Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum who are now the Co-Chairmen and CEOs of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have convinced Sony to use the new James Bond movie as leverage on a number of other productions. Sony and MGM are currently negocitating the details of this joint venture.

Insiders at the major studios previously negotiating with MGM described Barber and Birnbaum as “enjoying” the process of dangling James Bond like a carrot in front of studios such as Fox or Paramount.

Deadline has learned that Pascal and Lynton have already found a title on the Sony slate for MGM to co-finance.

It is understood that hot contender Paramount has recently bowed out of negotiations.

Ralph Fiennes in talks over James Bond role, claim tabloids

The British star Ralph Fiennes famed for The English Patient and Schindler’s List has been touted by the presses as having a connection to the 23rd James Bond film.

This time, however, the rumor spreads from the Daily Mail and uses buzzwords like “darkly complex” to describe the kind of role that Mendes apparently has in mind for Fiennes.

“It’s the first of a new generation of Bond films, and the ideas Mendes has push the film into darker territory where the characters are modern, mature and challenging,” a film executive in Los Angeles connected to the production told the paper.

The report claims the role Fiennes is in consideration for is not the same as the one as Javier Bardem is in talks for.

The Bond website MI6 explains that Mendes and Fiennes are old friends. Both worked on the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Troilus And Cressida. The play also featured Simon Russell Beale.

Bond 23 has a villain? Javier Bardem said to be in talks to star in the new James Bond movie

The award winning actor of No Country For Old Men-fame is reportedly being offered a big role in the new James Bond film.

The news comes from Deadline, who are almost always the first and most reliable industry blog to break the news.

Whilst it is not clear which role Bardem will take up – most are suspecting it will be that of the lead villain in Bond 23.

An offer to star in the new James Bond movie was reportedly made by EON Production’s heads, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to the Spanish star last week, coinciding with a Best Actor nomination for Bardem.

Deadline reminds fans that the actor is known to take offerings seriously and consider these at great lengths. For instance, he was rumored to have turned down a role in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel.
