Roger Deakins will not be back for Bond 24

The fantastic cinematographer that added an extra layer of sophistication to Skyfall has regrettably confirmed he wont be working on Bond 24. In February 2014 he told Thompson on Hollywood that he would not be back for the film. He added that Sam Mendes and John Logan, who would be returning from Skyfall, had particular contributions to make to the 24th instalment in the franchise, but that he didn’t “know what else I could do with it, really”.

The news didn’t really make much of a splash until, several days later, Kristopher Tapley tweeted that he had had dinner with Deakins and heard the news firsthand. “At dinner with Deakins last night I learned some news that makes me sad: He won’t be shooting the next Bond,” tweeded the hifix reporter.

Screenwriter John Logan explains how the “Skyfall” villain goes ‘mano-a-mano’ with Bond

John Logan is new to the Bond franchise, but already his debut, Skyfall, is winning critics hearts and getting the popular vote with phenomenal turnouts at the box offices.

Logan explained how the character of Silva and 007 spar in a long dialogue scene that introduces Javier Bardem’s character.

The sequence makes passing reference to Bond’s homoerotic past as a public schoolboy. Logan clears up some of his thinking behind the references to 007′s “gay past” and the of writing of Bardem’s camp character:

“Some people claim it’s because I’m, in fact, gay but not true at all,” Logan told The Hollywood Reporter at the NYC premiere of the film, thrown by Tribeca Film Institute. “Sam and I were discussing, there were so many scenes where Bond goes mano-a-mano with the villain, whether it’s Dr. No or Goldfinger or whatever, and there’s been so many ways to do a cat-and-mouse and intimidate Bond, and we thought, what would truly make the audience uncomfortable is sexual intimidation; playing the sort of homoerotic card that is sort of always there subtextually with characters like Scaramanga in Man With the Golden Gun or Dr. No. So we just decided that we should play the card and enjoy it.”

Daniel Craig had a hand in wooing Mendes to direct “Skyfall”

In a new interview with UK’s Esquire magazine, Bond star Daniel Craig relates a funny story about how thespian turned action-adventure director of Skyfall, Sam Mende, landed the directorial duties of this film.

“It’s a very showbizzy story. I was at Hugh Jackman’s house in New York. It was a soiree – we were in a play together – and Sam [film and theatre director Sam Mendes] was there. I’d had a few too many drinks and I went, ‘How do you fancy directing a Bond?’ And he kind of looked at me, and he went, ‘Yeah!’ And it snowballed from there.”

In the same interview Craig also revealed how he gets personally, emotively involved in the production of the Bond adventures:

“Bond movies live or die on their popularity. They force you to care about what people think. And I’m involved [in the films] on a very deep level. I have it in my mind all the time…So there’s that kind of pressure, and that’s an enemy in any art form, acting especially.”

Javier Bardem praises co-star Daniel Craig

The Spanish actor Bardem, who appeared as a shady silhouette in the first teaser trailer for Skyfall, says that Daniel Craig is “a great colleague”.

He told the National: ”He’s shooting non-stop and I’m thinking: ‘Oh my God, I don’t know how you do it’. He’s on top of all the stunts, and I go, ‘man, if I were you, I would be a mess’. In my opinion, he’s a great Bond.”

Although a raft of photos emerged onto the internet featuring Daniel Craig shooting on location in the UK and Turkey, Bond villain Bardem has kept a very low profile. The only picture we have seen of the actor in costume showed the villain in a clever disguise.

Sam Mendes says he wanted to create a real Bond villain

According to a comment the Director of Skyfall made to the media recently, Sam Mendes wanted to up the ante in terms of villainy seen in the 23rd James Bond film.

[It's been] a while since there was a classic … what I would call a classic Bond villain. I’m not saying these guys weren’t great. I thought Mads [Mikkelsen] was particularly good in Casino Royale

But I wanted somebody perhaps a bit more flamboyant, perhaps a bit more frightening, and so I felt like we needed a great actor to achieve that.

Sam Mendes ultimately cast Javier Bardem as the villain Raoul Silva – whose motives remain a closely guarded secret.

New Skyfall Videos give sneak peak at Berenice Marlohe’s involvement

007.com released two videoblogs today. The first has Berenice Marlohe, the french beauty playing Severine, discussing her role.

The second is action girl, Naomie Harris, who is playing Field Agent Eve. The character is set to see a lot of action and as Harris reiterates this in the video there is a behind the scenes look at the new Bond girl’s weapon training.

The most interesting thing, from our perspective, was a look at Severine on set. She is seen descending an escalator with two heavies behind her. Most of the people in the scene are Asian, and so we predict that she will have heavy involvement in the Shanghai sequences, shot mostly at Pinewood but with some outdoor action captured by the second unit. It also appears that more is going on in this scene that first meets the eye. Observant viewers note that Severine is passing information to a colleague going up the elevator.
