Cape Town wants Bond 23 – promises hassle free shoot after Indian troubles

James Bond may be back in India this year but South Africa is a hot contender for some Bond 23 action when shooting starts later this year.

After permission issues held up the production, and according to some sources delayed shooting on location, the South African Film Commission is promising a hassle free ride for 007: ”Cape Town welcomes James Bond whenever he decides to visit us,” said Cape Film Commission chief executive Denis Lillie.

The Commission tells the AP that Cape Town is a real alternative to the Indian West Coast.

“This demonstrates how a film project can very quickly go ‘off the rails’ if the coordination between city and government departments are not in place,” said Lillie, commenting on the railway permission issues Bond 23 is said to have faced.

James Bond 23 Indian locations are finalized

James Bond will be heading to north-west India, the Gujurat province, for the 23rd James Bond film.

Again, Pravesh Sahni of India Take One Productions reported to the Times of India that he had secured a filming deal in the Sabarmati railway yard.

Bond 23 will take fans to a less-than-familiar corner of India and the popular Mumbai and Goa are being blackballed by the production:

“We preferred Ahmedabad over Goa and Mumbai as for car chasing sequence the roads were apt and the Gujarat government promised to extend all support in the first meeting itself. For permission to shoot an action sequence on a train at Sabarmati railway yard we are meeting Union railways minister Dinesh Trivedi on Monday.”

As per earlier news it still remains to be seen if the production will get permission to close freight lines for hours per day in order to capture their planned action sequence.

Boffins over at MI6 claim that South Africa is not off the Bond 23 shooting schedule, despite extensive plans for production in India coming to light.

Bond 23 stunt sequence said to be blocked by Indian bureaucracy

It has been widely reported that 007 is looking to visit India in the forthcoming James Bond 23. It also will not come as a surprise to readers that according to Indian sources the production team are planning an action packed train trip for Bond. Previously it was reported that the Konkan railway was set to be a key locale.

Whilst location rumors have been quite for some time now, there appears to be a flaw in the plan… the government are unwilling to allow filmmakers to close sections of the track for time needed to shoot an action sequence.

Pravesh Sahni who is said to be looking after EON Productions whilst they are in India told the newspapers:

Trains are the backbone of the film. We’ll pay for the shooting and also mention Indian Railways in the credit line. The shooting was supposed to happen in October-November. Now, we’ve postponed it to January-February. For the past three months, we’ve been trying to get things in order. The film has Daniel Craig doing stunts on a freight train. While the Indian Railways has given us permission to shoot, I need to meet someone and explain how important it is for us to block two tracks for eight hours a day over five to six days.

Previously Roger Moore’s Octopussy shot sequences in India and involved a protracted train sequence… deja vu anybody?

James Bond 23 Art and VFX crew returning from earlier flicks

In more minor news, a couple of tips have come in from MI6 – the British Bond site – letting us know that Paul Inglis, Art Director and Steve Begg, Visual Effects, will be returning to James Bond 23 which commences shooting in November 2011.

Begg has previously worked on Casino Royale, where the VFX man was responsible famously for sinking Venetian houses.

Inglis had a hand in the 2008 adventure Quantum of Solace – designing interiors of the remote Perla De Las Dunas hotel. His current project is Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus”, which is shooting on the 007 Stage at Pinewood.

At least half of Bond 23 to be shot in South Africa, claim reports

According to the Budapest Report, at least half of 007′s forthcoming adventure will be shot in South Africa.

The English language press outlet from Hungary suggests a source close to the production has tipped them off.

This news runs in agreement with the rumors that 007 director Sam Mendes was in South Africa recently, location scouting. However, the recent buzz has been about Indian locations. Budget permitting, James Bond could be on his way to Asia and Africa.

However, most of the story here is addressing Carte Blanche, the new 007 book, and the assertion that half the film will shoot in South Africa is nothing more than an un-cited/unnamed source.

James Bond 23 news & rumor roundup

The bits you thought we forgot…

Cinematographer Roger Deakins working on James Bond 23

In a February interview with Collider website, Roger Deakins (cinematographer behind the Cohen brother’s films, as well as Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road) was probably doing a project with Sam Mendes.

As of April a Hollywood Reporter article dubbed him the new Bond 23 cinematographer (that top secret Mendes project).

The news was confirmed by Deakins himself on his fan forum on May 1st. He wrote: “Yes, I can say that I am doing the next ‘Bond’ film. It is early days and the film won’t shoot until November.”

Bond 23 Aims to Break Product Placement Dollar Record

According to the Australian a cinema record is being aimed at by co-financeers MGM and Sony Pictures. They hope that James Bond will raise $45 million in corporate sponsorship from the companies that want to see their brand associated with the world’s most famous spy.

Aston Marin Announce New V12 Zagato

James Bond website MI6 has the scoop on a new Aston Martin V12 Zagato – could this be 007′s car in the new James Bond film? It’s exclusive enough:

“The task for us has been to create a concept that is a natural successor to those iconic cars that have gone before. Matching the technology of the age with the traditional skills vital to deliver such a bespoke and exclusive sports car will lead to a strictly limited run of road going V12 Zagatos,” said Dr Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin.

Local producer excited to have Bond 23 considering shooting in Southern and South Africa

In a piece that focuses on the budding South African film industry, the rumors of 0f 007 heading to South Africa continue.

Anant Singh a film producer told The Hollywood Reporter: “We are excited that the new James Bond film is considering locations in South and Southern Africa. Film people love to work in our country.”

Although this is far from a stone chiseled source, perhaps people “on the ground” know a little more than they are letting on. This is the first mention of possible locations outside the borders of The Republic of South Africa – could this mean that Bond 23 producers are eyeing up more than one location on the African continent?

James Bond 23 Indian location rumors continue

Last week Indian presses reported that Bond 23 production members were seeking permission to film in India for Daniel Craig’s third outing as James Bond 007. Previous rumors tied James Bond 23 to the Konkan Railway line.

Now according to mid-day.com – James Bond might be swanning about Mumbai. The following is according to a “highly-placed source”:

Director Sam Mendes recently made a hush-hush visit to the city along with production designer Terry Bamber in mid-April for the film’s recce.  The movie will be shot in Mumbai and Goa during the monsoon season on a month-long schedule.

As ever, skepticism is the order of the day.

Is James Bond 007 bound for India in Bond 23?

Another possible location has made its way into the press rumor cycle.

According to The Times of India, James Bond may be location scouting on the stunning Konkan Railway, which runs from Mangalore to Mumbai. The scenery along the line is purportedly stunning.

The information is scant and as MI6 reminds us, India has managed to be rumored as a location for every film since, and including, Die Another Day.

What details there are come in the form of an uncited quote from an insider:

It’s at a nascent stage. Everything is being kept under wraps now. Permissions are being sought from the ministry. There have been talks about location scouting down the Konkan Railway line. If all goes well, the shoot might begin end of this year.

Bond fans will recall 007′s adventures in India in the 1980s for the stunning production of Octopussy.
